Popular NBA Betting Lines and Odds

When you look at our NBA betting markets, you will quickly realize that there are masses of them covering every aspect of the games and the league. Don’t worry if this appears slightly overwhelming at first, here you will find all the information you need to make full use of our betting markets.

Moneyline Bets

Sometimes referred to as a straight up bet, a moneyline bet is the simplest bet you can make. It is just a bet on which team will win a game. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are playing the Los Angeles Lakers, then the betting market may look something like:

Golden State Warriors +180        Los Angeles Lakers -210

When looking at odds, the favorites to win are shown with a minus sign and the underdogs with a plus. This means that the Lakers are favorite to win. The number after the minus sign tells you how much you need to bet to win $100 and the number after the plus tells you how much you win if you bet $100.

This means that if you were to bet $100 on the Lakers and they won, you would win $47.62 and you would receive your initial bet back. If you bet $100 on the Warriors and they won, you would receive $280, including your original bet.

A bet on the underdog is considered a higher risk wager, as they are considered more likely to lose, which is why the returns are greater. However, this means that if you think a team can cause an upset, it may give you the opportunity to enjoy great returns from a relatively small bet.

Point Spreads

Point spreads are used to make betting on the underdog a more attractive prospect. The markets come into their own when the teams are not evenly matched. The market gives the underdog an advantage before the game starts and the favorite is put at a disadvantage. An example market may look like this:

Boston Celtics +7.5          Milwaukee Bucks -7.5

In this this example, when backing the Celtics, for you to win the bet they would have to either win the game or lose by no more than 7 points. If you were backing the Bucks, then they would have to win the game by at least 8 points for you to win the bet. When you use this type of market, you are said to be backing a team to cover the spread. Very often, you may also see ATS linked to this type of bet, which stands for Against The Spread.

NBA games usually have spreads of at least 5 points, as basketball is a high scoring sport. Very occasionally, you may see a spread that is a whole number, i.e. without the .5. With the example above, if the spread was 7 instead of 7.5 and the Bucks won the game by exactly 7 points, it would be a push, and your bet is returned to you. However, generally half point spreads are used to avoid this scenario.

NBA Totals

A totals bet is usually on the combined score of both teams, i.e. the total score. They are presented as Over or Under markets, which means that you are betting on whether the total score would be over or above that number. For example, if the Brooklyn Nets were playing the Milwaukee Bucks, then the market may be Over/Under 240.5.

In this instance, if you think that the total score will be 241 or greater, then you bet over and if you think it will be 240 or lower, then you bet under. Once again, half points are used in the market to avoid a push.

You will find this over/under principle applied to many more markets. For instance, you will be able to bet on the total points scored by each team individually rather than the combined total. You can also bet on the total points scored in a particular quarter or half.

Prop Bets

Prop bets (short for proposition) are bets on aspects of a game or the season that are not directly linked to the outcome of a game. For instance, you will find game props such as:

  • Race to 40 points (first team to score 40 points)
  • First Team to Score Free Throw
  • Will there be overtime?
  • Winning Margin

Season props may include bets such as whether a team will make the playoffs or how many games a team will win during the regular season.

Parlays:

A parley bet allows you to combine two or more bets on one bet slip. The bets don’t even need to be of the same type, you can combine the moneyline from one game with the totals from another and a spread from a third. However, in order to win a parlay bet, each of your selections must be correct. This makes them harder to win, which is why the odds are so generous.

Here is an example using the following two betting markets:

  • Golden State Warriors +180        Los Angeles Lakers -210
  • Brooklyn Nets    Milwaukee Bucks Over/Under 240.5 (-110)

If you were to place two separate bets of $100 on the Lakers to win and an over bet on the Warriors game, then your potential winnings would be $138.53. If you were to combine them into a parlay bet, then your potential winnings from a single $100 bet would be $181.82.

It can be tempting to combine numerous bets to take advantage of some fantastic odds. However, the more complicated your bet, the harder it is to win.

Round Robins

Round Robin bets are a bit more complicated than a parlay, but they are also less risky. A round robin bet allows you to make a series of parlay bets on a group of at least three teams.

For example, if there are three teams playing in three separate games and you think they will all win. You could combine them into one parlay bet, which would have fantastic odds. However, if just one of those teams loses, then you have lost your entire bet.

A round robin gives you the chance to make three, two-team parlays using these three teams. For example, if we were dealing with the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Atlanta Hawks. The bets would be Nets/Lakers, Nets/Hawks, and Lakers/Hawks. If two of the three teams win, then you make a small amount of winnings. If all three win, then you make more winnings. If just one wins, then you lose all three bets. The returns won’t be as large as from a parlay, but you will have a better chance of winning something.

Live Odds

Watching an NBA match is always exciting but live betting, also known as in-play betting, can make it even more so. It allows you to bet on a match while it is taking place. There are many different markets available; for instance, you may be able to bet on the next team or player to score, the next to foul, to bet on changing spreads, and on. The odds and the markets are updated in real time, which means that by watching both the game and the markets carefully, you may spot some fantastic opportunities. This can really come into its own when you are using our mobile app. It will allow you to place in-play bets in seconds no matter where you are watching the game, at home, in a bar, with friends, and so on.

Future Bets

As the name suggests, future bets allow you to bet on something that will happen in the more distant future than the next game. When it comes to the NBA, there are many possible future bets. You are likely to come across bets such as:

  • To win the championship
  • To win the Western/Eastern Conference
  • To win a particular division
  • Regular season win totals per team
  • Team to make the playoffs
  • To be named MVP

You can place a future bet months in advance, even before the season starts. Normally, the further in advance you place a bet, the better the odds, which means that if you think there is likely to be an upset, you should place your bets early while the odds are in your favor.

This will give you a list of upcoming games together with shortcuts to place the three most basic bets very quickly, Spread, Total and Moneyline. You can add these bets directly to your bet slip, or you can click on ‘More Bets’ to see the full list of markets for a game.

Now you can see all the different bets for a game split into categories such as Game, Game Props, 1st Half, 1st Quarter, and so on. Simply find the bet that interests you and add it to your bet slip. Once you have added the bets to the slip, you will be offered the option to build parlays or round robins if you so wish. All you have to then do is enter how much money you wish to bet, place the bet and then wait to see if you have won.

NBA Betting FAQs

Is betting on the NBA legal?

The sports betting laws in the US are determined by the state that you are currently in. In recent years, many states have legalized sports betting and more are set to follow suite. As long as you are in a state that has legalized sports betting, then you can bet on the NBA legally. SuperBook Sports currently operates in New Jersey, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona, so if you are physically within either of those states then you can make use of all of our NBA betting markets with peace of mind. If you take the time to explore all of our betting markets carefully, then we are sure that you will find exactly the type of bet that you are looking for.

What is an NBA point spread?

Spread betting is one of the most popular forms of NBA betting. A spread bet is designed to even the playing field and give those who wish to back the underdogs a chance of winning their bet. You are betting on whether the chosen team will cover the number of points designated by the spread. You can see a worked example of this above.

What should I be considering when researching NBA bets?

Researching bets, which is known as handicapping, can be a very complicated business. People will consider a huge number of factors when making predictions. These include which team is playing at home, fatigue, a team’s momentum, player injuries, and so on. It is up to you how much research you choose to do, but you should never be placing blind bets.
