Popular NFL Betting Lines and Odds

There are many different types of bet that you can place on an NFL game, but three of them are more popular than the others are and they are a great place to start, especially if you are a newcomer to NFL betting. Each one is easy to understand and they all give you the chance of significant winnings.

Moneyline

The moneyline bet is the most straightforward of them all and the most popular. It is simply a bet on which of the two teams is likely to win the game. As it is rare for the teams to be perfectly evenly matched, the odds nearly always show a favorite, i.e. they have shorter odds, and an underdog, i.e., they have longer odds.

Imagine the Dallas Cowboys were to play the Houston Texans, the odds may be something like Cowboys-160, Texans +140.

The minus sign shows how much you need to bet to win $100 while the plus sign shows how much you win for every $100 bet. Therefore, a $100 bet on the Cowboys to win would see you receive $162.50 (as you receive your initial wager back) while a winning bet on the Texans would see you receive $250 (once again, you receive your wager back).

Betting on the underdogs always carries greater risk, but also the chance of larger winnings. Betting on the favorite will have smaller payouts, but the bets are more likely to win. It can take a little while to get used to doing these calculations, but when you place a bet, your potential returns will always be displayed on the bet slip.

Point Spread

In regards to football, the point spread is a figure calculated by odds specialists to give an advantage or disadvantage based upon the predicted margin an NFL team will win or lose by.

The favorite team is given the disadvantage in the point spread, as they need to win the game by a certain number of points. The underdog is then given an advantage, meaning that they then need to not lose the game by at least that many points or to win the game outright.

A typical point spread market for an NFL game might be: Cleveland Browns -7, New York Giants +7.

This means that the Browns are favorites to beat the Giants by at least 7 points. The market typically gives each team a “-110” odds designation for the spread. This will ensure that the matchup is even and give bettors a level playing field.

Before the game, you need to decide if you think that the Browns will win by at least 7 points or if the Giants will win the game or lose by less than 7 points. If you bet on the Browns -7 and the team then wins 31-28, it means that the Giants have covered the spread and your bet loses. However, if they were to win by 31-22, then it means that the Giants failed to cover the spread and you win your bet. If you were to bet on the Giants, your bet wins if they lose by fewer than 7 points (e.g. 31-22) or they outright win the game.

Totals

In an NFL game, the total is the predicted combined score of both the teams. Your job is to predict whether the total score will be over or under the value provided with the market. For example, you may see Cleveland Browns vs New York Giants – Total at 48.5.

You are then betting on whether the game’s final score will be more than 48.5 points (over) or less than 48.5 points (under). Therefore, if the Browns then won the game 27-20, it would be a total of 47 points and those who had bet on under will win their bets.

There are many things that you should consider when researching a totals bet. There are numerous NFL statistics available and you will want to consider the teams’ recent offensive and defensive statistics, the recent game results and matchups, the current standings, power rankings, and so on. You should also be aware of all the latest team news, such as whether there are any players out with injuries. Injuries are particularly important as if a team is missing a key player, such as a star quarterback, then it is sure to have a big impact on the game. You should also consider the weather as it too could have a big impact on a game. While this may sound like a lot of information to research before placing a bet, you will find that if you follow the sport as a fan, you will know much of it already and it does not take very long to look the rest of it up.

NFL Futures

The three bets described above all relate to specific games. NFL future bets are on things that may happen during the season but without referring to a specific game. The most basic NFL future bet is on which team will win the Super Bowl; however, there are many more future bets and they are a great way to ensure that you have some betting action at all times.

Other NFL future bets include:

  • A team to make the playoffs
  • To win the AFC or NFC Championship
  • To win a division (NFC East, NFC North, NFC South, AFC North, etc.)
  • To win MVP, Offensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year

Obviously, it can take a very long time to find out if you have won one of these bets. However, the further in advance you place the bet, the more generous the odds are likely to be, so it can certainly be worth waiting for.

For example, if you placed a $100 bet on the Lions to win the Super Bowl before the start of the season and the odds were +500, then you would win $600 if they went on to do so. However, if you were to place the bet in August, you wouldn’t receive the money until the next February, which may feel like a very long time to wait.

Game and Player Props

A proposition bet (prop bet) allows you to bet on factors of a game other than the result. Very often, they relate to the individual performances of players and make use of the over/under method.

For example, you may see Player X O/U 299.5 Passing Yards. In this case, you are betting on whether you think the given player will throw for 300 yards or more, or be limited to 299 yards or less. If you were to bet Over 300 and he is limited to 289 bets then your bet loses, if you were to bet Under 299.5 and he throws for 320 years then your bet also loses.

There are often masses of prop bets on offer such as

  • Quarterback O/U Passing Yards
  • Running Back O/U Rushing Yards
  • Wide Receiver O/U Receiving Yards
  • First Touchdown Scorer
  • Anytime Touchdown Scorer

When it comes to big games, such as the Super Bowl, there are even more prop bets available. Some of them require skill to determine, like those listed above, and others rely on pure luck, such as which team will win the coin toss. It is always worth having a careful look at prop bets, as you never know what you may find and they can be hugely rewarding.

Parlays

A parlay bet is when you combine multiple bets from separate games into one bet slip. In order to win a parlay bet, you need all of your bets to win.

For example, you may want to combine a moneyline bet, a totals bet and a points spread bet:

  • Saints -7 vs Falcons (-110)
  • Patriots Moneyline vs Jets (-160)
  • Cowboys-Giants Under 48.5 (-110)

When these three are combined, the odds become +492. This means that if you were to bet $100 on this parlay and all three of your bets win, then you would receive a $592 payout, which means a profit of $492.

You don’t have to combine bets from different games for a parlay, you can also combine bets from the same game. For example, you could bet on one team to cover the spread and a points total bet from the same game. By combining multiple bets this way, you will be able to take advantage of longer odds than if you were to place the bets individually, opening up the chance of larger profits. However, it does mean that the bets are harder to win.

Teasers

An NFL teaser bet is a way of adjusting the point spread to be more in your favor. Similar to a parlay, you need all of your bets to win in order to receive a payout. However, it gives you the chance to change the present point spread or total lines in order to lower your risk level.

A teaser will typically start at 6 points and they can go as high as 15. However, normally you will find that the most common varieties are choosing two or three teams and changing NFL lines by 6, 6.5 or 7 points.

This can sound confusing, so here is an example. You may see Pittsburgh Steelers vs Philadelphia Eagles with Pittsburgh at -4 and Los Angeles Rams vs Seattle Seahawks with the Seahawks at +6.

You may think that these sound appealing but you are worried that Pittsburgh may win by just a field goal or that the Seahawks may lose by a touchdown. If you combine these games in a 7-point teaser than you will have Pittsburgh at +3.0 and the Seahawks at +13.

This means that any win by Pittsburgh is a cover and that the Seahawks are also covered in many more circumstances. However, this does come at a cost as the teaser bet has moved the line in the direction of your choosing. Unlike a two-team parlay, which often pays +260, a two-team teaser pays -130. In other words, you have reduced the risk but also reduced the potential payouts.

Live Betting

NFL live betting, also known as in-play betting, is when you place a bet on a game as it is taking place. There are live odds and lines on offer for each drive and you can normally also find many proposition bets. You can place a “result of drive” bet on how a given team will perform in a specific drive, such as if the quarterback will throw an interception or complete his next pass, or if the team will score.

The odds will change rapidly based upon what is happening on the field. However, by keeping a careful eye on them, you may spot some fantastic opportunities.
