Popular Tennis Betting Lines and Odds

There are multiple betting markets available on every tennis game, and each one represents another opportunity to win. Therefore, it is working making sure that you understand them and know how to incorporate them into your betting strategy. Here we will explain the most common of them.

Moneyline Bets

This is the most common type of wager in all sports betting and the easiest to understand. It is simply a bet on which of the two tennis players will win the match. As long as your chosen player wins, then you win the bet. For example, if Novak Djokovic was to play Andy Murray, then the betting market may look like this:

Novak Djokovic -205       Andy Murray +175

Newcomers to tennis wagering may find this a little confusing at first. The player with the minus sign is the favorite to win and the player with the plus sign is the underdog. The number after the minus sign tells you how much you need to bet to win $100 and the number after the plus sign tells you how much you win if you bet $100.

Therefore, with the above example, if you were to bet $100 on Djokovic and he won, then you would win $48.78 and you would receive your $100 bet back. If you were to bet $100 on Murray and he were to win, then you would receive $275 (including your betting money).

The underdog will always offer the chance of bigger returns, but the bets are harder to win. However, if you think a player is going to cause a surprise upset, then it can be a fantastic opportunity to land a big win.

Over/Under Sets and Games

In the context of tennis, an over/under bet is a bet on how many sets a match will have. You do not need to pick a match winner, you are just betting on the duration of the match. For example, in a three-set format, you will have the option of betting over or under 2.5 sets. This means that you can wager that the match will be won in straight sets (under 2.5) or that it will require all three sets (over 2.5).

The same principle of over/under betting is often applied to the total number of games, in either a set or the entire match. For example, if you think a set will be won 6-0, then you may bet that there will be under 6.5 games. If you think the match will be won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, then you may bet that the match will have under 19.5 games.

Points Spread

The points spread, often called the handicap, is very similar to other sports betting. As some tennis matches are very uneven, the market is designed to create a more even betting field. Each player is assigned a handicap. The weaker player is given a plus and the favorite player a minus. However, this time the underdog is also given a game advantage. An example may look like this:

Novak Djokovic -3.5        Andy Murray +3.5

This means that Djokovic is favorite to win the match. However, if you were to bet on him, then you would only win the bet if he won by at least 4 games (which is known as ‘covering the spread’). If you were to bet on Murray, then you would win your bet as long as he won the game or did not lose by more than three games.

Correct Score

As the name suggests, this market allows you to bet on what you believe the exact score of a match or set will be. Obviously, this is quite difficult to get right, which is why these types of bets often offer the chance of large returns. A correct set bet is a bet on how many sets each player will win while the correct score is a bet on what the exact score of a set will be.

Prop Bet

Prop Bets are markets that allow you to bet on whether specific events will occur during a match. The markets may vary from match to match but examples include Player To Win At Least One Set, Any Set To Finish To Nil, and Total Games Odd/Even.

These markets can be very creative and an enjoyable way to wager on a different aspect of a match. The markets are very easy to understand as most often you will be betting on Yes/No scenarios, such as whether there will be a tiebreak in a match or whether a player will win at least one set.

Futures

With most tennis tournaments, you will be able to place a wager on who will be the overall winner. Rather than wagering on individual matches, you can simply bet on Djokovic to win the US Open or Murray to win Wimbledon. Normally, you can place this type of bet before the tournament begins and during the tournament itself. However, the further in advance you place the bets, the better the odds tend to be.

Parlays

You may wish to bet on many of tennis matches taking place in one round of a tournament. One option is to place individual moneyline bets on each of the matches. However, you can improve the odds and reduce the amount you have to bet using a parlay bet. The only thing to be aware of is that it increases the risk. A parlay combines multiple bets, but to win a payout, all bets must be correct. For example, you may have the following two matches and moneyline markets:

  • Andy Murray -280           Adrian Mannarino +240
  • Vasek Pospisil -135          Jeffrey John Wolf +115

If you want to back Murray and Pospisil to win, then you could do it with two separate bets. If you were to place $100 on each and both were to win, then you would collect $109.78 in winnings (and receive your $200 back). However, if you combined them into a parlay and placed one bet of $100, then your potential winnings would be $136.24.

You can combine many different bets this way on many different matches; they don’t even need to be the same type of bets. This way, you can get some astounding odds and have a lot of fun.

Round Robins

A round robin bet is another way of combining multiple bets. It requires a minimum of three bets and it is actually less risky than a parlay.

If we take the example from above and add another match to it:

  • Andy Murray -280           Adrian Mannarino +240
  • Vasek Pospisil -135          Jeffrey John Wolf +115
  • Denis Kudla -155              Alejandro Tabilo +135

If you were to back Murray, Pospisil and Kudla to win with three $100 bets, then your potential winnings become $174.30. If you were to place a parlay consisting of all three bets, your potential winnings become $288.66. However, a round robin offers odds that are even more generous and if all three predictions were correct, then you would win $445.90 from a $100 bet.

A round robin bet is actually a way of making multiple parlay bets at once. It consists of a number of small parlays that includes all possible combinations of events. Using the above example, you would be betting on Murray/Pospisil, Murray/Kudla, and Pospisil/Kudla. This means that as long as at least two of your predictions are correct, then you will win a payout.

Live Betting

Tennis offers some fantastic live betting opportunities. You can bet on a match as it takes place and by keeping a sharp eye on the match and on the available odds, you may spot some great opportunities. For instance, you could bet on the next player to break serve, the next player to win a set, the next player to double fault, and so on.

Tennis Terminology

When researching your tennis wagers, there is a fair amount of sport-specific terminology that you are going to come across. It is worth ensuring that you know exactly what it means:

  • Sets – A tennis match consists of between two and five sets. To win a set, a player must win at least six games.
  • Match – Depending on whether the match is best of three or best of five, a player must win two or three sets to win the match. For example, in a best of three match, if each player wins a set, then the final set becomes the decider.
  • Love – In tennis, the term love is used to mean 0 points.
  • Points – The points in a game within a set follow a slightly unusual structure. Each player starts on love (0) and then goes to 15, then 30, then 40, and then game point (the winning point). For example, if Player X has 40 points and Player Y has zero, the score is said to be 40-love.
  • Serving – The server is the first person to strike the ball in each point. At the start of a match, a coin is flipped to determine who gets first choice. The winner can decide if they want to serve first or receive first. When a player serves, they have two attempts. If the second serve fails, then the opponent receives the point. The same player serves until a game has been won. After each odd-numbered game, the players switch sides on the court.
  • Deuce – If the score is tied at 40-40 then it is called a deuce. The game continues and the next player to score is said to have the ‘advantage’. The game is won when a player wins two consecutive points after a deuce.
  • Grass, Hardcourt, Clay – These are different types of surface a tennis match may be played on. It will affect the speed and bounce of the ball.

Alternatively, you can place the moneyline bet directly from the overview just by clicking on the relevant set of odds. You can then add your bets to the betting slip, where you need to enter how much you want to wager and it will display your potential winnings. If you want to place a parley or round robin bet, then this can be setup through the bet slip.
