What’s a new arena mean for the Capitals and Wizards?

Barring an unforeseen hurdle, the Capitals and Wizards will be playing home games in a new arena come 2028. They’ll ditch Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. for a new venue in Alexandria, Va.

The proposal will have a huge impact, on multiple franchises and communities. First and foremost, it’ll allow the Capitals and Wizards to remain competitive in the NHL and NBA, respectively, with state-of-the-art facilities. It’ll also bring a huge economic impact to the D.C. suburb, as Alexandria will now host 41 regular-season games for each team.

But it doesn’t end there. Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the owners of the Capitals and Wizards that have proposed the new building, won’t be abandoning D.C.

Instead, they’ll revamp Capital One Arena to better suit the organization’s WNBA team, creating a venue that is perfectly fit for the Mystics. In addition, the facility will be tailored for concerts, comedy shows and other performances.

It’s a long-term vision that will change the sports landscape in the D.C. area. And it’s one that can only benefit the Capitals, Wizards and beyond.
